Malian singer Rokia Traore attracted a lot of attention with her 1998 debut Mouneissa and the even better Wanita in 2000. Now the singer-songwriter returns with Bowmboi, an album filled with creative aspiration but still set within the framework of traditional Malian instrumentation. As with the past efforts, the singer is again accompanied by acoustic guitar, n'goni (African lute), kora harp and balafon (a buzzing marimba). But here the stripped-down songs are darker and more mature, creating an overall vibe that sensuously haunting, particularly when she adds polyphonic multi-track call-and-response vocals. Amidst these earthy arrangements, the Kronos Quartet joins in for "Manian" and "Bowmboi." Having a western and modern classical feel, the music is a departure that nonetheless works because Traore matches their rhythms while staying within her creative vision. Indeed, her singing in her native Bamanan is the cornerstone to the album, soaring high and erupting into cadenzas or riding long wavering lines that shimmer with passion.

Singer Susheela Raman has a dual life as an Indian person living in England who grew up in Australia. And while she studied the music of her ancestry, she's always found a way to bring her adopted culture together with that of her heritage. She does that again on Music For Crocodiles, her third album. While this album has more English language songs than any of her previous efforts, she goes further the other direction as well, working for the first time with several different Indian guest musicians. It's understood that Raman has a world-class voice endowed with a sexy rasp to soften the edges, but the epic sound behind her is equally potent as it seamlessly integrates folk styles and electronics. The same goes for the songwriting -- percolating Indian tabla and catchy Western melodies gracefully compliment each other on such songs as "Leela" and "What Silence Said." As ethnicity is interfaced in the digital age, here's an accomplished effort that sounds Eastern and Western as well as new, old, and timeless.

Plants hide their roots (koreshki) to protect them from bad weather while their leaves (vershki) are directly affected by the constant changes in the weather. These two vital parts develop simultaneouly but in opposite direction thus maintaining the balance of the overall organism.
The group Vershki da Koreshki grew in the same way: the roots are formed by two descendants of ancient cultures of Africa (Senegal) and Central Asia (Tuva). The leaves are two compatriots from Saint Petersburg who are nourished by jazz, classical and contemporary music and improvisation.
The synthesis of these seemingly contradictory elements results in the band's great freedom of style and concept.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is one of those acts that everyone should go and see. The sweet South African harmonies of this band, which was brought to these shores thanks mainly to Paul Simon's Graceland record, are still as strong as ever. Having worked with everyone from Dolly Parton to Eric Clapton, the ten member group, led by founder Joseph Shabalala, has released a new album but under rather tragic circumstances. While on tour in 2002, Shabalala's wife Nellie was murdered by a masked gunman outside a church in South Africa. There are still no leads and no suspects. So after enduring hardships through apartheid, this is possibly the hardest album for the group. But it is also one of their best.
Shabalala's vocal starts off the title track, which slowly gives way to the group's a cappella greatness. From the rolling of the tongues to the give and take Shabalala leads the other nine through, the sound is a bit somber but there is a hopeful spirit in it. The melody near the halfway point is another plus. It's a good introduction into the rest of the record. "Uqinisil' Ubada (Lord Is the Light and Truth)" is more upbeat and up-tempo, despite still being void of any instruments aside from voice. Shabalala starts the refrain that is the foundation of the song and then proceeds to sing over and at times under the rich tenor and bass harmony.

The musical life of Arabs in the pre-Islamic period was centred around the Qayna, singing-servants that combined their musical talents with the functions of cup-bearer and courtesan. The Qayna formed a social class of their own. They established themselves in major commercial centres, enabling them to easily make contacts with rich merchants. Their role was to distribute drink, singing and sensuality. Their art consisted not only of reciting verses from the great poets of the period, but also to sing them. This required a thorough command of language and a sound literary background.

From the point of view of the form and the substance, Qayna singing can be split into two genres: Sinad and Hazadj. Sinad deals with serious subjects such as dignity, praise, pride and gravity. It consists of long classical verses. Hazadj, on the other hand, is entertainment intended simply to amuse the listener. It consists of short classical verses accompanied by lutes, flutes or tambourines.
