The Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo has been a fixture on the world music scene since the early 1990s, with the success of her first internationally released album, PARAKOU. Her inclusive style blends African, Caribbean, Brazilian, and Western rock musical influences in an irresistible potpourri, crowned with her powerful, distinctive voice, which can turn on a dime from sweet to savage.

Helmed by the veteran producer Tony Visconti, DJIN DJIN follows Kidjo's practice, established on previous albums, of featuring high-caliber guest vocalists, including in this case Peter Gabriel, Ziggy Marley, and Alicia Keys. The wide-ranging set encompasses the haunting, swaying "Salala," the delicate title track, and a typical Kidjo-style Africanized reworking of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" (on past albums she has also reinterpreted classics such as Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" and Serge Gainsbourg's "Ces Petits Riens"). It's a testament to her formidable musical personality and impeccable musical taste that, despite the presence of her high-powered guests, Kidjo puts her unique stamp on this impressive and eclectic collection.

Many world music fans will recall Issa Bagayogo's Timbuktu, the Malian artist's stateside debut. However, Bagayogo first struck gold on Sya, originally released in 1998 to great acclaim in Europe and Mali. It's on Sya that Bagayogo, guitarist Moussa Kone, and programmer Yves Wernert first infused traditional Malian music with electronic beats and other technological production techniques. Creating a more unobtrusive backing than would be heard on Timbuktu, Wernert's programming on Sya not only updated the traditional music, but did so without overshadowing the hypnotic and subtle acoustic strings and percussion. Listeners can hear the timbre of Bagayogo's remarkably expressive kamele n'goni (a small, six-stringed, lute-like instrument) playing as he transitions from low, earthy, fuzzy notes to high clear notes that have the delicacy of acoustic guitar. Perhaps it was the initial rush of this first collaboration that made it so good, but Sya is an even more compelling, and more subtle, listen than the still very fine Timbuktu.

Kohachiro Miyata: Shakuhachi
Sachiko Miyamoto: Koto
Keiko Nosaka: Koto
Ayako Handa: Biwa, Voices
Hirokazu Sugiura: Shamisen
Minoru Miki: Director, Bells

Comments:
The Ensemble Nipponia was formed in 1964 and is dedicated to the performance of traditional and contemporary commissioned work for traditional Japanese instruments. They have been touring all around the world. It is still today one of the most known and most respected traditional Japanese chamber music ensembles. Among its members, the most known musician is Kohachiro Miyata on shakuhachi, who is considered one of today's best Japanese shakuhachi players. On this CD recorded in 1976, you hear a series of traditional classical pieces for solo shakuhachi (a honkyoku piece and a minyo song or folk song) and shamisen, a koto duet, a piece for biwa and voice, an arrangement of a well-known lullaby, and an 18th century piece for voice, shakuhachi, shamisen, and koto. This CD remains still today one of the classics in Japanese music.

Info:
Mamadou Diabate is a master of the kora, the ancient 21-string West African harp. He was born in Kita, Mali, a city long known as a center for the arts and culture of the Manding people of West Africa. As his last name indicates, he comes from a family of griots, or jelis as they are known among the Manding, who are traditional historians, genealogists, and story-tellers as well as musicians.

Mamadou’s father taught him to play the kora as a child, and from there he listened and watched, and devoted himself to practicing the instrument. Before long, Mamadou was playing kora for local jeli singers throughout the region at ceremonies such as weddings and baptisms. At sixteen he went to Bamako, where under the tutelage of his famous cousin, Toumani Diabate, he worked the jeli circuit and entertained the powerful at the city's posh Amitié Hotel.

After touring the US in 1996 as part of the Instrumental Ensemble of Mali, Mamadou decided to stay in the US and now calls it home. He performs nationally and internationally as a soloist, as well as leading the Mamadou Diabate Ensemble, which includes himself on kora, Balla Kouyate on balafon, Baye Kouyate on talking drum and calabash, and Noah Jarrett on bass.

Mamadou Diabate has collaborated broadly with jazz musicians from Donald Byrd to Randy Weston, as well as popular figures from Afropop star Angelique Kidjo and Zimbabwean legend Thomas Mapfumo to blues mavericks Taj Mahal and Eric Bibb, and even the jam band Donna the Buffalo. He gets frequent invitations to perform with visiting Malian stars including grand divas such as Ami Koita, Tata Bambo Kouyate, Kandia Kouyate, and Babani Koné.

Since 2000, Mamadou Diabate has released three CDs, one of which, Behmanka (World Village), was nominated for a Grammy in 2005.

Background information:
"On January 29, 2002, U.S. President George W. Bush gave his famous "State of the' Union Address" to the American people wherein he launched the term "The Axis of. Evil". In this speech, he pointed out Iran, Iraq, North Korea "and their allies", as being;. ..the enemies of the U.S. and the free, democratic world. This and other speeches, held by Bush and other leaders of the greatest power on the planet, made it clear that the "war on terrorism" following the events of Sept. 11. '2001. needed to identify nations -not only terrorist-cells -as the enemy,
Without going too far in analysing the reasons behind this new way of fighting an old problem, it is easy to become worried about the fatal results the new doctrine may-create.The stigma that has been attached to the countries pointed out as members of "The Axis of Evil" is just one side of it. The building of enemy-lines and walls, in minds and on the ground between peoples, is another. The fact that it misleads us and covers the real problems in the world is a third. .
Lullabies lead us to the deepest and most fundamental way of communication between human beings. It is where all sharing of ideas and feelings starts. Between mother and child, between father and child. It is a universal culture. And it is amazing to see how many aesthetic similarities, musically and lyrically there are in lullabies from country to country all over the world. The text-issues are often the same, so are the musical structures. Differences in scales, language, metaphors and religion cannot cover the fact that in the lullabies, the cultures of the earth meet each other. Or rather: from this common starting-point they grow into diversity.

This knowledge made me want to record lullabies from the countries that the U.S.-lead western world now has put on the other side of its enemy-lines. I wanted to record women's voices. It does not mean that I think the act of singing lullabies is something reserved for females. After having raised four children, I am an experienced lullaby-singer myself. It only means that the male voices are far too dominant in the world today, speaking the words of power and warfare. And especially in the oriental world the women are pushed aside. Their voices are hardly heard.
Between the journeys I had periods at home with editing, putting together the best version of each song, and then I delivered a bunch of lullabies from my last expedition to guitarist-arranger-composer-artist Knut Reiersrud. Our common ambition was to create a musical landscape around every lullaby, and I left it to him to choose the songs he wanted to work with, and to compose a comparative melody - possible to sing for a western voice - to be attached to each of the originals. It was amazing to hear how he was able to find the rhythmic element in each of the a cappella sung lullabies and let it appear as though the singers "conduct" a band they never heard. Knut led the work with the band in the studio, and together we worked out a final structure, sometimes in cooperation with the western artists.

Katice is a women's vocal group from Ljubljana brought and kept together by their enthusiasm for a large diversity of Slovene folk songs as well as by a strong desire to seek for yet untrodden paths of combining old, simple and beautiful songs with new times and musical tastes. These songs are authentic folk songs coming from all regions of Slovenia, and they lay a particular stress on those coming from marginal parts of Slovene ethnical territory, namely Rezija, Bela Krajina, Istria and Prekmurje. It is especially in these regions that the folk songs, under the influence of the neighbouring countries, attained an extraordinary richness of expression. Katice are also interested in contemporary arrangements of folk songs so as to bring Slovene tradition closer to the present day situation. In the last ten years, our way of life has changed drastically, and so has the role of folk songs. This is why Katice find a challenge in unveiling new dimensions lying hidden in folk songs: thus their combining the old with the new, the traditional with the contemporary.

At the very beginning, their repertoire contained folk songs in their more or less authentic form. These songs were first to be recorded on a CD ("Katice", 1995) and can be found in various publications and original recordings made by the Institute of Ethnomusicology in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The second CD ("Se dela greh ...se slisi smeh", 1998) already introduces their first arrangement of a folk song, "Ma saua cenca". Since then, the number of arrangements has been constantly growing. The third and last CD ("Jungfraua", 2001) gives birth to but arrangements, and three compositions ("Jungfraua", "Gizdava" and "Istrijanka") have an instrumental and electronic musical background.
