If there's one area of Africa where great musicians tend to get decent coverage in the west, it's the neighbouring west African states of Senegal and Mali. Surprising, then, that Daby Balde slipped through the net. He's a fine singer from Cassamance, in the south of Senegal, and though he is well known back home he is only now beginning to win international recognition.
Like Salif Keita, Balde struggled to become a musician despite objections from his noble family. His distinctive, laid-back vocals are backed by the subtle textures of an impressive acoustic band, with kora and guitars matched against fiddle work, added later in Belgium. The only problem with Balde's debut album is the lack of variety. Having discovered a gently rhythmic, easy-going style, he simply sticks with it. Taken individually, though, the songs are superb, which is why Balde deserves his second appearance of the week, providing the opening track on Sound of the World (Wrasse), the annual world music round-up by Charlie Gillett. Here, Balde appears alongside his compatriot Youssou N'Dour, and other celebrities including Mali's Amadou and Mariam. If he's this good playing live, and can vary the mood of his work, he could start to receive the same sort of recognition.

''Romano raj'' (Gipsy Paradise)

The history of music is full of stories about fortunate outcomes, breakthroughs, fortunate and unfortunate events, misery, tragedies and treacheries. Saban Bajramovic has had plenty of each and some to spare. A legend in his own lifetime, he’s become a synonym for Gypsy music. So many stories have been told about him that there’s no way to separate fact from fiction. He even managed to survive Goli Otok (Barren Island), the infamous prison camp for political prisoners in post-WWII Yugoslavia, though he was imprisoned for deserting the army in order to see his girlfriend. Hard life has left traces and bruises on his soul. God knows how many times he was stabbed, beaten, cheated. In general, his life has been a dynamic turn of events that eventually (and righteously) brought him the title "The King of Gypsy Music" (or "The Nat King Cole From the City of Nish"). Many of today’s famous musicians earn millions by recording some of his approximately 700. However, one thing is certain—there’s no way to separate the man from his songs, lyrics and music. Romano Raj (Gypsy Heaven) marks a new turn for this 71 year-old singer. After fifteen years away from recording, he arrives with a strong album where, as usual, he is the complete author. Supported by Dobrovoljno Kovachko Drustvo (the Voluntary Blacksmith Society), a team of experienced musicians on the Serbian scene, Bajramovic delivers a dynamic album full of passionate vocals, and a tasteful mixture of Gypsy songs with jazz, funk and Cuban flavors.

After a ten year hiatus from the spotlight, Vaya Con Dios and it's driving force, singer Dani Klein are back with a new album, The Promise. Originally formed in 1986 by Klein and then partner, bass player Dirk Schoufs with guitarist Willy Lambregt, the band achieved international success by breaking down genre barriers within popular music. By effortlessly combining a rich variety of Mediterranean rhythms, along side melancholy gypsy music, Indian, and Arab sounds, it all showcased the trademark voice of Dani Klein. Vaya Con Dios went on to sell over 7 million albums and had such hit singles as 'Just A Friend Of Mine' and 'Puerto Rico' from their debut album 'Vaya Con Dios' in 1988 'What's a Woman' and 'Nah Neh Nah' from the album Night Owls in 1990.

Ismael Lo possess one of the finest voices in Senegal, but he uses it sparingly. His last album of new songs was released five years back, and the one before that appeared 12 years ago. So has this been worth the wait? Well, sort of. The man once dubbed the "Bob Dylan of Africa" because of his acoustic guitar, harmonica and trenchant lyrics now sounds like a cool soul singer, with his distinctive, relaxed vocals matched against lush backing, with brass, strings and keyboards. He never quite breaks into a sweat, but his songs are for the most part a gently upbeat blend of Senegalese mbalax, reggae and ballads. The subject matter apparently covers anything from arranged marriages to democracy, but despite his fame as a lyricist, no English translation is provided.
Still, it's a classy set, even if the orchestration can be annoying. His classic song Tajabone sounded better when he first recorded it 15 years ago, without the sweeping strings.

Written by Elvis Costello in response to an article detailing the discovery that a Veronese academic had been replying to letters addressed to 'Juliet Capulet'. The delicate and personal nature of the content of such correspondence has inspired a wonderful and poignant set of songs arranged specifically for, and performed by, The Brodsky Quartet. This is a deceptively simple and work, baring all the qualities of Costello's intelligent sense of melody.

In essence, this album is a beautiful mixture of great themes from the classics, combined with the force and dynamism of one of the funkiest rhythm sections yet heard; the result is yours to judge and the rest assured that the album has had rave reviews across the world. The concept of this album is one of continual surprise, musical wizzardry and just sheer excitement. Peter Herbolzheimer and Jimmy Pratt have pulled together a wellknown international line-up of top class musicians (including "The Concert and Symphony Strings of Cologne"). It is an album of moods and colours, incorporating the sweeping grace of Grieg with "Anitra's Dance", the peace of Schumann with "Falling Asleep", the majesty of Bach with "Air", and a host of surprises including melodies from Tschaikovsky, Borodin. "Galaxis" is one of the few albums that cannot be categorized, cannot be faulted and cannot be put aside. There are so few musical productions that can equally well appeal to a broad spectrum of age groups ; and when one does appear, as "Galaxis" has, it is surely an event.

One of the last great Horace Silver albums for Blue Note, Serenade to a Soul Sister is also one of the pianist's most infectiously cheerful, good-humored outings. It was recorded at two separate early-1968 sessions with two mostly different quintets, both featuring trumpeter Charles Tolliver and alternating tenor saxophonists Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, bassists Bob Cranshaw and John Williams, and drummers Mickey Roker and Billy Cobham. (Williams and Cobham were making some of their first recorded appearances since exiting the military.)

Silver's economical, rhythmic piano style had often been described as funky, but the fantastic opener "Psychedelic Sally" makes that connection more explicit and contemporary, featuring a jubilant horn theme and a funky bass riff that both smack of Memphis soul. (In fact, it's kind of a shame he didn't pursue this idea more.) Keeping the album's playful spirit going, "Rain Dance" is a campy American Indian-style theme, and "Jungle Juice" has a mysterious sort of exotic, tribal flavor. "Kindred Spirits" has a different, more ethereal sort of mystery, and "Serenade to a Soul Sister" is a warm, loose-swinging tribute.

You'd never know this album was recorded in one of the most tumultuous years in American history, but as Silver says in the liner notes' indirect jab at the avant-garde, he simply didn't believe in allowing "politics, hatred, or anger" into his music. Whether you agree with that philosophy or not, it's hard to argue with musical results as joyous and tightly performed as Serenade to a Soul Sister.

Recorded in 1959, this is an early chronicle of one of the finest bands of the hard-bop genre, pianist Silver's classic quintet with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer Louis Hayes. The group already epitomized Silver's own virtues of precision and hard swing, with each soloist committed to direct and concise statements, at all times both emotionally and musically focused. There's effective contrast, too, between Mitchell's subtle turn of phrase and Cook's raw intensity, each filling in Silver's vision of a music that combined the complexity of bop and the immediacy of blues and gospel. "Cannonball" Adderley has played with giants of jazz and in combos of his own selection and each outing is stellar.

Along with the talented horn of Nat on these cuts he manages to continue to produce music of an always high caliber. These session were held in February and March of 1960 and captured work that helps to remind us that the blues, particularly those dirty blues, are the bedrock upon which jazz was built.

Each player holds his own and brings something to the table with him. Sam Jones has provided the bottom end for such luminaries as Theolonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie. Pianist Bobby Timmons left during the sessions to return to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and was replaced with local Detroit player Barry Harris. The cover photos capture a quiet, interested subject. A very nice record for your Sunday afternoon jazz fix.
Recorded in early 1960, Them Dirty Blues contains two classic jazz compositions: Nat Adderley's "Work Song" and Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere," the sequel to "This Here." This was alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley's second quintet with brother Nat Adderley (cornet), and features Bobby Timmons on piano (who plays on four tracks and was replaced by Barry Harris on the remaining five), Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Them Dirty Blues was originally released on Riverside until Adderley made the switch to Capitol where he brought several master tapes with him, including these sessions. The CD reissue contains an alternate version each of "Work Song" and "Dat Dere."
