Chalf Hassan
Background information
Chalf Hassan is a young musician and singer from Morocco (Casablanca). He was born into a religious family, was steeped in Koranic culture but also became adept at a range of local percussion and stringed instruments. His music is based on traditional folk and classical songs given a distinctively personal treatment which he has developed since he first came to London in 1984. He played throughout Europe with Arab, Western and African Musicians for years before crossing cultural barriers to create his Arab-Spanish fusion.
With his lute, drums and an ever changing line-up of musicians Hassan started his carrier playing with groups and performed for theatre companies all over Morocco. He was also a member of professional orchestras and has formed a couple of groups that were named after him.
He is expert at playing many different and complex rhythms and music. For this he was invited by Hossam Ramzy to join Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (ex Led Zeppelin) on their historic reunion 1995/96 World tour.

Majid Bekkas - Gnawa Blues

Majid Bekkas, oud and guembri virtuoso, guitar professor and singer, has long been a star in his home country Morocco. Over the last few years, he has found his way into the European jazz scene through his collaborations with Archie Shepp, Louis Sclavis, Flavio Boltro or Klaus Doldinger. Abdelmajid Bekkas was born and still lives in Salé, Morocco. He studied classical guitar and oud at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Rabat and learnt Gnawa music through the teachings of the master Ba Houmane. Gnawa appeared in the 16th century. During the conquest of Sudan, Ahmed El Mansour Dahbi set up the first trading and cultural links between Timbuktu, near Zagora where Bekkas comes from, and Marrakech. The secular music is still considered the "healer of souls" from Essaouira to Marrakech, easily understandable when you listen to the spellbinding sound of Bekkas´ voice, guembri and guitar. Like a watermark, the mystery of Africa can be felt in the backround, alongside the blues. Gnawa´s intact purity is the essence of the authenticity. By claiming to be part of Africa, the mother of the blues and ist numerous offspring such as funk, Bekkas is placing Gnawa in its primary dimension. By opening the spectrum (including elements of contemporary western music), Bekkas attains a universal status that is nurtured by the path he travelled. These include: jazz, alongside pioneers such as Peter Brötzmann, Archie Shepp, Flavio Boltro, Louis Sclavis.
With "Daymallah" Bekkas represents Morocco on the award-winning CD compilation "Desert Blues 2". He already performed at several international festivals, such as WOMEX Sevilla 2003, Gaume Jazz Festival, Huyart Festival, Grenoble Jazz Festival, Festival de Essaouira, ...
Bekkas´ openness and ability to balance modernism and memory with a rare talent that knews no compromise, frees the music from the stamp of time. The memory is that of pain and wisdom, of songs that come from the slaves of Africa.

It would have been groundbreaking enough for the Israeli Ofra Haza to have performed an album of Yemeni Jewish songs. But when she and producer Bezalel Aloni added synthesizers, drum machines, and a generous helping of dance beats, they ended up creating one of the seminal records of world music--one of the very first ethno-techno releases whose reverberations extended into dance clubs around the globe, most especially with "Galbi." While its contemporary sound might make it seem shallow, there really is a lot of depth here, the lyrics coming from the poetry of 16th-century rabbi Shalom Shabazi. Along with fellow spirits like Dissidenten, Haza helped pave the way for Transglobal Underground, Natacha Atlas, and Banco de Gaia. --Chris Nickson

Background information
On his first Intuition Nubenegra release El Sueno de Al-Zaqqâq, Spanish musician and producer Luis Delgado sets the works of twelfth century Moorish poet Ibn Al-Zaqqâq into music.
Thus an expert of Moorish culture still present in today's Spain through its breathtaking architecture, Delgado mixed the sound of original Arabic instruments such as Ud, Bendir, Nay, Turkish Qanun, Tajira, Darbuka, and many more (mostly part of his own private collection of over two hundred instruments) with ambient sounds created with digital instruments of more contemporary times. The poems are interpreted by the haunting voices of Aurora Moreno and Mohamed El Arabí Serghini; entwined with the wonderful music of Luis Delgado they take us to places in which it seems only pleasant to live: El Sueno de Al-Zaqqâq easily seduces the listener into dreaming along, of a world full of wonder.

In 1991 the pair of Dirk Schoufs and Dani Klein lose interest in each other and Dirk leaves the band. Soon afterwards he dies of a drugs-related infection disease. The Album "Time Flies" which is released a year after, is the saddest thus far, with a lot of soul influences but also trips across the border to music of Latin-America. The album is entirely a Dani Klein product, which makes it clear that the group is in fact a singer, a "femme fatale".

Habib Koité Gets Afriki: Africa’s Musical Ambassador Releases First Studio Album in Six Years
After a six-year absence from the recording studio, Malian guitarist Habib Koité and his band Bamada return this fall with a stunning new album, Afriki. With more than 250,000 albums sold around the globe, an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, a duet with Bonnie Raitt on her 2001 album Silver Lining and nearly a thousand concerts on some of the world’s most prestigious stages under his belt, Habib Koité is one of Africa’s most beloved and popular musicians. Afriki, which will be released by Cumbancha on September 25th, 2007, features an appealing set of songs that reflect Habib’s unique and innovative approach to the diverse styles of Malian music.

Habib Koite is known for his unique approach to playing the guitar. He tunes his instrument to the pentatonic scale and plays on open strings as one would on a kamale n'goni. At other times Habib plays music that sounds closer to the blues or flamenco, two styles he studied under Khalilou Traore, veteran of the legendary Afro-Cuban band Maravillas du Mali. Unlike the griots, his singing style is restrained and intimate with varying cadenced rhythms and melodies. His supporting cast, Bamada, is an explosive super-group of West African rhythm section talent.

"Nobody really taught me to sing or to play the guitar," says Habib Koite. "I watched my parents, and it washed off on me." Koite was headed for a career as an engineer, but on the insistence of his uncle, who recognized Habib's musical talent, he enrolled at the National Institute of Arts in Bamako, Mali, launching his twenty-year career.

Background information:
For this project Rob Kramer artistic director of productiehuis Oost-Nederland (ON) invited Ad van Meurs, Haytham Safia and Anne-Maarten van Heuvelen; their assignment was to investigate a possible combination of folkblues and traditional Arabic music.

Both folk-blues and the Arabic taqsim (the improvised interplay without a fixed rhythm) are exceptionally suited for storytelling; the former in a somewhat rawer way, the latter mostly lyrical and melodic. In the same way as Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie documented their era in the early 20th century, the instrumentalist is the torchbearer of a centuries-old tradition in the virtually unwritten Arabic music culture. Traditional Arabic music differs from other music cultures in the way in which the music scale is subdivided. Thus the music can adopt forms that are nearly impossible in the western octave system.

In the NO blues sessions the musicians soon succeeded in establishing a singular integration of folk-blues and Arabic music. A real cross-breeding we call ARABICANA.
The sessions were concluded in 2004 and in 2005 the HT studio was visited in order to record the first album "Farewell Shalabiye" under the supervision of Ankie Keultjes.

After making waves with the first album 'Farewell Shalabiye', a second album called 'Ya Dunya' is just released in februari 2007. This album has 10 brand new tracks including 3 songs together with Tracy Bonham on vocals and violin.
