With the latest album „cruisen“ the Thomas Siffling Trio (Markus Faller drums / percussion, Jens Loh upright bass) presents a delightful easy going Nu Jazz with a high musical ambition and substance. In short: a young and contemporary German Jazz and music to relax, groove and feel good! The sound spectrum of the CD is amplified by the Hungarian vocalist Veronika Harcsa with her sonorous and sensual voice and by the master of electronic keys Xaver Fischer. Another highlight on the CD are the remixes created by Club des Belugas and Jelly Jam. But why the name “cruisen”? After being successful with the last trio CD “kitchen music” with all the wonderful recipes corresponding to the music, it was clear to Siffling to continue with the concept. So the concept of “cruisen” was more than reasonable to him, as Siffling is a car enthusiast and driver of a sports car. He loves cruising around with his car and enjoying the atmosphere and the landscapes. Corresponding to the music the CD presents nine European car routes to travel along while listening to the music.

Chances are high that if you like the first two records from L.A.-via-Seattle's Big Business, you'll also like the band's third album in four years, Mind the Drift. While that may sound like quintessential question-begging, it's not, as bassist Jared Warren and drummer Coady Willis added guitarist Toshi Kasai before writing and recording much of number three. To these ears, Willis and Warren have always been a pop band that clad great hooks-- listen for "Eis Hexe" from Head For the Shallow, or "Grounds for Divorce" from Here Come the Waterworks-- within thick metal plates. They've had fun, too, taking risks with the occasional expansive instrumental track or a hard-charging tune that, without warning, opens wide into synthesizer wizardry and choral vocals. Infinitely likable and accessible but ultimately distinct and identifiable, Big Business have long seemed hard rock's answer to Phoenix. Aside from both having backed more-established acts (Phoenix once backed Air; Mind the Drift is Big Business' second since becoming an official half of the Melvins), both bands take magnetic pop cores and cast them into surprising musical contexts. Phoenix goes for sharp guitars and billowing keyboards. Big Business go for skuzzy bass and busy drums.

Mind the Drift seems to be an expansion of that: Willis still viciously circumnavigates his drumkit with authority and adventure. Warren still manhandles a viscous bass tone that he funnels into heavy themes. Kasai adds texture and dimension, augmenting what's there instead of adulterating it. The hooks are still memorable, and the arrangements are still heavy. On "The Drift", for instance, bass and guitar are locked into a direct charge, while Willis dances on and around the beat with his cymbals. "You take the east/ And I'll take the west/ If we meet in the middle/ We'll know," barks Warren, his voice handled better than ever before by producer Phil Ek. On single "Gold and Final", Kasai's guitar actually takes the lead, twisting through an anxious, repetitive phrase. He keeps his tone and sound small, though, a juxtaposition that emphasizes the size of the giants-- bass, guitar, and Warren and Willis' countering vocals-- towering overhead. This album's mid-point weirdness, "I Got It Online", works through a similar spatial effect. Warren anxiously shouts phrases like "Too many squares/ Too many cruds/ Too many nerds." His distorted bass and Willis' restless drum beating wrestle Kasai's guitar pattern-- staccato notes nervously scattered through the mix with delay-- for room. Lyrically and musically, it's an epic battle of nerves. In duo form, the tune would've sounded incomplete.

And perhaps that's what some folks have liked about Big Business all along: Where I heard pop possibility turned tough, I suppose others simply heard two guys beating pretty good songs about social anxieties into a heavy metal mess. For some, Kasai's addition has worked as a distraction from that unequivocal beastliness. I reckon those folks will really dislike "Theme From Big Business II", a finessed seven-minute metal anthem with an arching guitar line, chimes, and well-placed harmonies that sound a little like Crosby, Stills & Nash gone wild. For the most part, Warren sticks his bass playing to the script, and Willis builds his drum lines through well-considered waves. Kasai, meanwhile, is all over the place, making his guitar mirror a horn before sweeping through a fast cycle of riffs and variations. I think it rules, and I loved Big Business I. Maybe you loved Big Business I, too, but you hate this. That would be too bad.

Goon Moon is an American rock band composed of Jeordie White (also known as Twiggy Ramirez from Marilyn Manson) and Chris Goss. The band released a mini-LP called I Got a Brand New Egg-Layin' Machine and have since recorded a full-length album Licker's Last Le, which was released on May 8, 2007. The album features cameos from longtime Goss collaborator Josh Homme, Josh Freese, as well as desert rock mainstay Dave Catching. Jeordie has once again adopted the Twiggy Ramirez stage name and has rejoined Marilyn Manson as of January 9, 2008. The Goon Moon Myspace page states that the band are still together and that future releases are on the horizon

Chris Goss and Jeordie White, the duo that is Goon Moon, both proved their rock credentials years ago, the former for his production work and as a member of Masters of Reality, the latter as Marilyn Manson's Twiggy. If there were any doubters left, Licker's Last Leg should bury them for good, as the Goonies, across a dozen eclectic tracks, prove themselves the masters of all things rock. On the epic-length "The Golden Ball," they showcase virtually the entire rock spectrum, from psychedelic to folk, hard rock, metal, prog rock, jazz fusion, pomp rock, and more, an entire master class in a song. However, they slyly slide subgenres into each other, as on the opening "Apple Pie," which begins in a racket of scratchy strings, slips into goth, then slithers into unadulterated glam -- sheer brilliance, that. But it's soon obvious that these two are comfortable in any genre you throw at them, from the blues-laced hard rock of the late-'60s that fires "An Autumn That Came Too Soon" to the angular post-punk rhythms that later "Tip Toe" across the set. From the Stonesy R&B-fueled "Balloon?" to the poppy psychedelic-laced "Lay Down," the album is infested with strong melodies and catchy choruses. And whether you prefer your rock down and dirty like "Hardcore Q3" or sweetened up by swirling atmospheres and lovely vocals like their Beatlesque-with-a-twist cover of the Bee Gees, "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You," Goon Moon serve it up here. An inspired set, with a slew of singles-to-be within, and enough twists and stylistic turns to keep you guessing until the final note rings out.

The lights, the sounds, the excitement… If you've ever been to New York City, you know what I'm talking about. Regardless of the borough, walking around the city is exhilarating, bordering on overwhelming, keeping you hyper-vigilant for fear of missing something really, really cool.

Imani Coppola sounds like New York. The Black and White Album is just like the city - a countless array of styles and sensibilities whose differences compliment each other so completely that it creates a world you can't really experience unless you've seen, or in this case heard it. Can't afford a plane ticket? This album is a lot less expensive and well worth the trip.

Ms. Coppola manages to be both tough-as-shit and cute-as-hell on these fourteen tracks of rock-hop goodness. Making an album about everything and everyone that pisses you off while still sounding like a party record shows talent and skill. Or as the lady herself so succinctly puts it, Ain't nothin' more offensive than the plain truth.

Coppola has been releasing albums on her own for years, but now has finally found a home on Ipecac, the home for orphaned bands that any other label would have deemed “unmarketable.” Ipecac takes these strays in, gives them a warm, nurturing environment before sending them off to seek their fortune. As such, Ipecac provides albums of a certain pure pedigree that cannot be disputed.

Perhaps you were first introduced to Ms. Coppola on the Peeping Tom tour. That's where I first discovered her. When seeing Mike Patton live with any of his legion of projects, the one common denominator is that it's hard to take your eyes off of the man. When I saw the band live, I'm not ashamed to say I was transfixed on this woman, performing stage right, for virtually the whole show. A charismatic artist to say the least, I'm astounded by watching her perform and in listening to this album that she isn't better known. She has all the range and talent as Mary J. Blige with a funny, biting wit reminiscent of Macy Gray (only, you know, more coherent).

Running the gamut from “Woke Up White,” the best song The Distillers never wrote, to happy piano ditties that take a lyrical turn to the dark side - “Raindrops from the Sun” - to full-on beat heavy cruisers like “Keys 2 Your Ass” which, in its execution manages to be ten times better than the type of song it parodies. It might be the middle of Winter, but this album most certainly provides the feel-good hits of the Summer.

[Eddy Senay - Hot Thang]

Lurking in the shadows of Dennis Coffey on Sussex Records was another funky guitarist from Detroit, Eddy Senay.  There doesn't seem to be a lot of information about Senay's background, but he recorded a couple of LPs that are well worth seeking out if you are a fan of funk guitar.   More Grant Green than Eddie Hazel, Senay's style is understated and may appear too slow for casual fans.

A heck of a great little guitar funk album -- one of two rare sides cut by the amazing Eddie Senay! The record's all-instrumental -- and Eddie's fuzzed-out guitar takes center stage over tripped-out arrangements that recall the best psychedelic funk of the early 70s -- bubbling along with just enough drums, bass, and keyboards to make for a chunky bottom groove -- while Senay wails over the top on guitar! The record reminds us of similar guitar funk albums from the time -- including the work of Dennis Coffey, Eddie Fisher, or Donald Austin -- but the groove's even more laidback and trippy, with a few nice breakway moments from the rhythm section.

Eddy Senay - Step By Step

The second smoking Sussex album from guitarist Eddie Senay -- and arguably even better than the first! The tracks here are all instrumentals -- played with a style that's tight, right, and very on the money -- mixed with keyboards from Rudy Robinson, who also arranged the numbers on the set. There's kind of a choppy early 70s soundtrack funk groove to the whole set -- with Eddie's guitar bad-stepping its way over Rudy's sweet keyboards -- all in a relatively lean groove that's laidback and loose, but still supremely funky!

Howlin' Wolf - The Howlin' Wolf Album (1969)

Here is a bit of experimental psychedelic blues that has a certain level of funk within. This album was said to be absolutely hated by most blues purists but funk enthusiasts and crate diggers found a genuine interest in it so the album became sort of a cult classic long after it's drop date back in 69' on Chicago's Chess label. Even the blues great, Howlin' Wolf himself said that he didn't care for the album as it contained (as he calls it) "queer" beats. Being a funk lover, I like to describe the album as a collection of The Wolf's great blues tunes played in a hard & funky context with elements of psych/rock & electric blues. There is some sweet drumming & elec. guitar to be found here...especially with the album being released in 69' when the world really wasn't quite ready for this sort of offering.

Root 70 - Heaps Dub

The creative quadrangle of Nils Wogram, Jochen Rueckert, Matt Penman and Hayden Chisholm, Root 70 are a jazz quartet whose loose-limbed style has seen them taming trad-jazz, reggae, dub, latin jazz and tender acoustica to produce a sound that is instantly recognizable and utterly irresistible. In a move that could easily have been interpreted as aurally political, Root 70 have taken the music of Flanger and Burnt Friedman & The Nu Dub Players and soused them clean of any electronic detritus to expose an organic heart beneath the more digitally motivated aspects of Friedman's work. Whilst this has never manifested itself as bleeps and beats, Friedman nonetheless used a silicon scalpel to retool his work to make it sound more natural - a policy Root 70 have extended by "re-naturalising" the selected pieces on offer. Comprising four dub tunes, four latin-jazz songs as well as a spoken word collage and a silky smooth jazz track, 'Heaps Dub' is idiosyncratic to the last -with each piece lasting exactly five minutes and managing to pack more freewheeling instrumentation into those 300 seconds than many similar outfits manage over an entire album. Intricate, clever and (most importantly!) fun, 'Heaps Dub' is the sound of musicians in love with their craft. Root down!
